Skimming is a thin top coat of finishing plaster, usually a few millimetres thick, applied over plasterboard or existing plaster that is still sound. Plastering can also involve a thicker backing coat, or fixing new plasterboard first, when the existing surface is damaged, uneven or has been removed. We will tell you honestly which approach your walls need.

Fresh skim usually turns from dark pink to a pale, even colour within a few days, but drying time depends on room temperature, ventilation and how thick the plaster is. Once it is fully dry it should be sealed with a diluted mist coat of emulsion before the top coats go on. We can advise on your specific job and can carry out the decorating for you.

In most cases, yes. Textured ceilings can be skimmed over to give a smooth, modern finish, provided the existing coating is stable. Older Artex from before the mid-1980s can contain asbestos, so if we suspect that is the case we will recommend having it tested before any work is carried out.

We can. Nash Plastering also offers painting and decorating, so once the plaster has dried we can mist coat and paint the walls and ceilings, tackle the woodwork and even hang wallpaper. Having one trade complete the whole job saves you time and avoids gaps between plasterer and decorator.
